D:Lab Mobile Summer Projects Update Session

Over the summer break, the D:Lab had several students use design thinking to innovate and co-create with organizations and companies such as Vodafone, Casa Trassaco, Café Kwae, Burro Brand, GN Electronics and our very own university Ashesi. This event was organised to get a sense of progress and the way forward for each of these projects.

Audrey S-Darko, presented on her team’s progress with the Cafe Kwae Use Experience projects and how she looks forward to ending the project with a market strategy proposal that her team will present to the manager of Cafe Kwae. Kelvin Dogbetse detailed his team’s progress on exploring and improving employee productivity of Tradeworks. His team hopes to continue research work, however, the future of this project hinges on their availability outside school work; possibility during school breaks.
Aisha Jallow and Purity Musau, who worked on the Ashesi Fundamentals of Design and Entrepreneurship (FDE) Research project which centred on developing tools (templates etc.) for helping students visualize things in cleaner, more professional and more engaging ways such as developing hieroglyphic-mnemonic devices to help students remember the design thinking process and methods. They presented a few of their findings and how these finding will influence future FDE classes. The D:Lab Coordinators also presented on the state of other projects.


D:Lab Fellows Update Session

Students with projects in the D:Lab updated the community with what they had done with their projects.

D:Lab Farm Modelling Project (in collaboration with Sesamu) : Exploring agriculture and using design thinking to model farming practices in response to unique food demands in the market

D:Lab Deep Dives Project: Building capacity to undertake social innovation projects. We are currently collaborating with the Burro Brand team to learn ethnographic research methods for doing work in rural communities in order to discover opportunities for innovation.

D:Lab Business Modelling Project: Developing a business model for hands-on science education as a pilot to build skills for business modelling. The Fellow will lead a project to explore micro-franchise models for scaling social enterprises. The PEN Education project from MIT, which is also currently participating in an incubator program at Growth Mosaic in Osu, is providing us with this opportunity.

D:Lab Dumsor Project – Unlocking the mystery behind low solar power adoption on the equator: The Fellow will lead a project using design thinking to explore this issue in with technical assistance from Stadler RE from the Netherlands and Dr. Hanne Lauritzen from the Danish Technical Institute.

Burro Ghana: Rural Innovations with Solar Energy

Thd D:Lab held a brainstorm session with Whit Alexander and his team from Burro Brand Ghana LTD with students of Ashesi University College on household innovations for rural communities on December 2nd, 2015.

Students worked alongside a team from Burro Brand to analyse existing products of Burro and to innovate around potential groundbreaking products that Burro could invest in. Teams empathized from the point of view of users in rural communities which are a major target market group for Burro products and brainstormed to arrive at potential needs of this group.
